CBD oil has been very popular for a long time, and for good reason. In fact, CBD oil is widely applicable and can therefore be used for various complaints and conditions, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Indeed, scientific research is increasingly proving that CBD oil could mean hope for individuals with cancer.
To what extent can CBD oil in chemo help reduce symptoms? You’ll find out all about it below. For your convenience, you will find an overview below to easily jump to the desired topic:
Cancer and chemo
Cancer is a nasty and unfortunately common condition associated with a fatal outcome. In the Netherlands, the most common types of cancer are skin cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, lymphoma and bladder cancer. Other cancers include kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer and esophageal cancer.
Even though survival rates continue to increase every year thanks to updated techniques, chemotherapy or chemo treatment is almost always necessary. Many persons undergoing chemotherapy experience unpleasant symptoms. In fact, they get sick from chemo, with symptoms such as nausea, insomnia, decreased appetite and anxiety.
What is chemotherapy?
Chemotherapy, also called a chemotherapy, is a treatment in which the patient receives one or more courses of cell division-inhibiting anti-cancer drugs. The options here are curative chemotherapy to cure the cancer, and palliative chemotherapy. This form of treatment aims to inhibit tumor growth or relieve symptoms.
The most common types of chemo in cancer are alkylating agents, nitrosourea, antimetabolites, antitumor antibiotics, topoisomerase inhibitors, antimitotic cytostatics and corticosteroids.
Medication and side effects with chemo
Medication in chemotherapy treatment is taken by mouth (tablets), an injection or an IV. For most cancer patients, chemotherapy consists of a number of treatments, first with a high dose and then a temporary rest period for body recovery. After this rest, the next chemo treatment is started.
Unfortunately, chemo treatment makes chemo patients intensely nauseous, to the point of vomiting and a loss of appetite causing the patient to experience weight loss. Other side effects of chemo include diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, fever and mouth sores, pain, bleeding and bruising. If these are long-term side effects that do not occur until later, consider heart and kidney problems, infertility, hair loss, anemia, infections, tissue damage and an increased risk of cancer in the future.
To alleviate these unpleasant side effects, more and more cancer patients are beginning to look into the possibilities of CBD oil with chemo. There is increasing consideration of adding cannabis to current treatment. If you want to start using medicinal cannabis, check with your doctor or specialist to see if you can combine your medications with CBD oil.
Chemo in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, more than 800,000 people have some type of cancer. Cancer is more common in men (52%) than in women (48%), although this ratio varies greatly by cancer type. Thousands of new cancer patients are added every year. In 2019, there were 117,000, giving the Dutch Cancer Registry a national total of 3.5%. An average of 45,000 people die from cancer each year.
Can CBD oil cure cancer?
No, CBD oil is not capable of curing cancer. While there are studies that suggest CBD oil can block cancer cells and slow the creation of new tumor blood vessels, actual evidence that cannabinoids can stop tumor growth and thus cure cancer is not yet available. If the cancer patient is undergoing chemotherapy, CBD oil for chemo can provide relief from the additional symptoms that belong to chemotherapy.
How does CBD oil work in chemo?
According to studies, chemo and CBD oil go very well together. CBD oil in chemo works in such a way that it suppresses the side effects of chemo. So you get less sick from chemo thanks to CBD. According to experience with CBD oil and clinical studies, these are the ways CBD could help patients undergoing chemotherapy:
- The intense nausea and frequent vomiting caused by chemo or cancer-fighting medication is reduced.
- CBD has pain-relieving properties. Patients with pain due to chemo or as a result of tumors can use CBD to relieve pain thanks to improved transmission of signals.
- Appetite is stimulated. As a result, CBD counteracts slimming or unwanted weight loss.
- Sleep rhythm is promoted thanks to CBD oil.
- Anxiety, stress and tension are relieved with CBD oil.
- The immune system is strengthened and digestion is supported.
Although medicinal cannabis does not cure cancer, it can contribute to symptom relief, and it could possibly slow the development of cancer cells, according to anecdotal evidence. There are even studies showing that cannabinoids in combination with chemo is able to enhance the effect of conventional chemo treatment course and can help treat multiple sclerosis.
Cancer patients need less chemo as a result, allowing them to recover faster mentally and physically and thus cope better with cancer. Thus, survival rates are ultimately significantly increased in cancer patients and quality of life is greatly improved.

Research CBD oil in chemo
Scientific researchers in the 1970s conducted many studies on the effectiveness of CBD oil in chemo and cancer treatment. According to some studies, CBD did appear to be able to affect the immune system and may inhibit, kill or prevent cancer cells.
Researchers from California and San Diego studied how cannabidiol CBD use worked out for 826 cancer patients between 2005 and 2014. They concluded that more and more participants switched to CBD during these 10 years. Over 40% of all participants continue to use CBD to relieve symptoms of cancer and chemo.
In Israel, a study took place between 2015 and 2017, with nearly 3,000 cancer patients (in palliative care) taking medicinal cannabis to determine the extent to which symptoms improved. Of all participants, 96% experienced relief from pain, insomnia, nausea and weakness. In addition, 36% of the participants stopped using painkillers and 10% were able to reduce the dosage of painkillers thanks to CBD.
CBD oil in animals with cancer
Your pet, like any other family member in your household, is part of the family. Most pets such as dogs, cats, birds, hamsters and the like have a shorter life expectancy than humans, and pets are also unfortunately susceptible to cancer. To combat the cancer, there are several (often expensive) veterinary medications that can help, and in addition, drugs are often given if the animal is too old to handle chemo.
CBD oil can provide a natural alternative for pet owners to improve the health of their animals. Pets undergoing chemotherapy experience less discomfort from the cancer or the treatment itself.
Replenishing your dosage
Try supplementing your daily dosage with CBC oil and CBG oil. According to numerous users, the combination of CBD with CBC and CBG produces the most effective and fastest results, especially when it comes to cancer patients experiencing intense side effects from chemotherapy.

Side effects and interactions with other drugs
Users report no side effects when using CBD oil, provided the oil is taken according to the recommended dosage. With excessive doses, mild side effects are possible, including dry mouth, nausea, irritability, abdominal pain, insomnia and dizziness. If you are breastfeeding or pregnant, skip using CBD oil just to be on the safe side.
According to some studies, certain cannabinoids may adversely affect other drugs as they metabolize enzymes in the liver. As a result, reduced drug efficacy occurs, or the side effects of the drug are significantly amplified. You may also have problems with lowered blood pressure and an accelerated heart rate. Therefore, always consult your doctor or specialist before starting to use CBD oil with chemo.
The form of administration
Individuals who have cancer and are undergoing chemotherapy usually choose CBD oil as their form of administration when using medicinal cannabis. Using the pipette makes dosing easy: place 2-3 drops under the tongue three times daily for quick and effective absorption. Want to increase the dosage? Then do so incrementally and exceed the maximum stated on the package. Another well-known form of CBD administration in chemo patients is CBD capsules.
If you are going to use CBD oil in chemo, then you should read the instructions for use carefully first so that you know how to use the oil.
The dosage of the oil
Dosing CBD oil for chemo is quite easy, although you should keep in mind that the ideal dosage can vary considerably from person to person, from complaint to complaint and from situation to situation. Adults taking CBD oil for the first time should start slowly and stick to this plan:
- Build up the dosage carefully. Take 2 to 3 drops three times a day.
- Note the effects on the body.
- Increase the dosage as desired and needed, but to the maximum stated on the package.
- Are the complaints over? Therefore, gradually decrease the dosage.

Choose a full spectrum CBD oil
Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and suffering from chronic pain have been found to benefit more from a combination of CBD and THC oil. Unfortunately, THC is not yet legally available, but you can obtain it through your doctor or make your own cannabis oil as world-renowned Rick Simpson has done. If you want to use CBD oil with chemo, choose a Full Spectrum oil.
Full spectrum CBD oil contains other substances from the hemp plant with beneficial effects in addition to pure CBD. This is an oil with a full profile of cannabinoids and terpenes for better results, including CBG, CBC, CBDA, as well as small amounts of THC and CBD. Our Full Spectrum CBD oil contains less than the legal 0.05% THC. With a Full Spectrum CBD oil, the compounds reinforce each other more than if taken independently, or entourage effect.
