What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by the bite of a tick infected with the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. The longer the tick sits on the skin, the more likely it is to become infected. A tick becomes infected by sucking blood from rodents or birds.
Lyme disease can be treated well if you catch it in time, although the condition is far from easy to recognize. At a later stage, however, you may suffer permanent damage because of the inflammation. These include memory loss, inflammation in the nerves of the brain or spinal cord, peripheral neuropathy and cardiac arrhythmias.
Symptoms of Lyme disease
If you have been bitten by a tick infected with the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, you will recognize this by the ring-shaped rash around the bite. This ring is called the “erythema migrans” and is not visible on the skin until several days to weeks after the bite. However, the rash does not always have to look annular, and by no means everyone gets a rash. There are other symptoms besides skin rash that are linked to Lyme disease, namely:
- Flu-like symptoms;
- Sore muscles and joints;
- Pain around the body;
- Insomnia and irritability;
- Swollen glands;
- Headache and nausea;
- Fever and chills.
Lyme disease in the Netherlands
According to recent RIVM figures, more than 1.5 million Dutch people are bitten by ticks every year. Of these, an average of 27,000 people contract Lyme disease, or 2 in 100 people. Over 1,000 to 1,500 people retain long-term symptoms after healing. We can conclude that 1 in 5 ticks is infected with Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria.
Lyme disease medication
In most cases, Lyme disease is treated with a course of antibiotics and opiate painkillers. However, such medications do not work for many, patients experience unpleasant side effects and painkillers are addictive. Many patients additionally develop persistent health problems after antibiotic treatment.
However, more and more evidence is emerging that CBD oil can be used effectively in Lyme disease.
The endocannabinoid system
As humans, we all have a body’s own endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is responsible for several important bodily functions, including sleep, pain regulation, appetite, hormonal balance, emotions and the like. By supplementing the ECS with CBD oil, the CBD is considered body-own by the ECS.
How does CBD oil work for Lyme disease?
Unfortunately, Lyme disease cannot be cured with CBD oil, but the symptoms can be alleviated. CBD can optimally support the ECS when used regularly and consistently. Below is a listing of how CBD oil can be used in Lyme disease:
- CBD oil can help speed up recovery thanks to its anti-inflammatory effect.
- CBD oil works to combat pain. This relieves pain in patients with Lyme disease.
- CBD oil can greatly enhance sleep for optimal recovery. The day after, you feel fitter, more energetic and able to concentrate better.
- CBD oil can be used for skin problems such as rashes and itching. This is because the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines after a tick bite is inhibited.
- According to research, CBD can kill or control certain viruses, fungi and bacteria that cause Lyme disease.
CBD oil also helps with other symptoms of Lyme patients, including migraines, cramps, nausea, anxiety and spasms. CBD oil for Lyme disease, by the way, also boosts the immune system, which is especially important in some people.
